Construction has begun on the much anticipated future home of GLCPS' Joan and Irwin Jacobs STEAM Education Center. Crews have been clearing debris to prepare the interior for the state-of-the-art facility that will house, among other things, science labs, a maker space, music room and the school's College and Career Center.

The Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) recently broke ground on a major renovation and expansion project to create a state-of-the-art educational facility in the north end of New Bedford. "Today, we have reached a milestone as we begin the transformation of the building behind me,'' said the school's executive director, Stephen Furtado. "This addition to our current building will include new science classrooms and labs, a technology maker space, an expanded College and Career Center, world languages, mathematics, music and art rooms."

Three meetings have been scheduled to accommodate GLCPS families. It's expected the meetings will be well attended.

BayCoast Bank, a local institution committed to serving its communities, has pledged $250,000 to Global Learning Charter Public School's capital campaign to create one state-of-the-art campus in New Bedford.

Construction on the former St. Anthony's convent is underway and we anticipate the new Joan and Irwin Jacobs STEAM Center will be ready to open by the start of the next school year. The renovation project includes a newly designed parking lot, a new boiler for the main campus, and a new roof.

As with any major construction project, we know there will be challenges. This includes the number of available parking spaces. The construction trailer will be placed on the Bullard Street side of the building eliminating the parking spaces there. Some spaces could also be affected in the main parking lot. We apologize to our staff and families for this inconvenience but we know it will be worth it in the end.

In addition to the renovation project, GLCPS has applied to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to increase our enrollment by a modest 100 seats. A decision is expected in January.
